How horrible it will be for those who make unjust laws and who make oppressive regulations.

They deprive the poor of justice. They take away the rights of the needy among my people. They prey on widows and rob orphans.

Priests and prophets stagger from wine and wobble from too much liquor. They stagger from too much liquor and become confused from too much wine. They wobble because of their liquor. They stagger when they see visions. They swerve as they judge.

those who make people sin with words, those who lay traps for judges, those who, without any reason, deny justice to people who are in the right.

The tricks of scoundrels are evil. They devise wicked plans in order to ruin poor people with lies, even when needy people plead for justice.

Truth is missing. Those who turn away from evil make themselves victims. The Lord sees it, and he’s angry because there’s no justice.

I know that your crimes are numerous and your sins are many. You oppress the righteous by taking bribes. You deny the needy access to the courts.

Your leaders exchange justice for bribes. Your priests teach for a price. Your prophets tell the future for money. But they rely on the Lord when they say, “After all, the Lord is with us. Nothing bad will happen to us.”

Their hands are skilled in doing evil. Officials ask for gifts. Judges accept bribes. Powerful people dictate what they want. So they scheme together.

As a result, you will be held accountable for all the innocent blood of those murdered on earth. This includes the murder of Abel, who had God’s approval, to that of Zechariah, son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.

Never pervert justice. Instead, be impartial. Never take a bribe, because bribes blind wise people and deny justice to those who are in the right.

You have condemned and murdered people who have God’s approval, even though they didn’t resist you.
