Go into the dark, and sit in silence, princess of the Babylonians! You will no longer be called the queen of kingdoms.

O Lord, I have called on you, so do not let me be put to shame. Let wicked people be put to shame. Let them be silent in the grave.

Let go ⌞of your concerns⌟! Then you will know that I am God. I rule the nations. I rule the earth.

The stars in the sky and their constellations won’t show their light anymore. The sun will be dark when it rises. The moon won’t shine.

“It will become the possession of herons. It will become pools of water. I’ll sweep it with the broom of destruction,” declares the Lord of Armies.

Then you will mock the king of Babylon with this saying, “How the tyrant has come to an end! How his attacks have come to an end!”

Look! Here come chariots and horsemen in pairs.” Then he said, “Babylon has fallen! It has fallen! All the idols they worship lie shattered on the ground.”

Be silent, you inhabitants of the coastland, you merchants from Sidon. Your messengers have crossed the sea.

Go, sit in the dirt, virgin princess of Babylon! Sit on the ground, not on a throne, princess of the Babylonians! You will no longer be called soft and delicate.

You said, “I will always be a queen.” You didn’t carefully consider these things or keep in mind how they would end.

I will take from them the sounds of joy and happiness, the sounds of brides and grooms, the sound of mills, and the light of lamps.

Why are we just sitting here? Let’s get up! Let’s go into the fortified cities and die there. The Lord our God has condemned us to die. He has given us poison to drink because we have sinned against the Lord.

“Look how deserted Jerusalem is! Once the city was crowded with people. Once it was important among the nations. Now it is a widow. Once it was a princess among the provinces. Now it does forced labor.

The respected leaders of Zion’s people sit silently on the ground. They throw dirt on their heads and put on sackcloth. The young women of Jerusalem bow their heads to the ground.

The Lord is in his holy temple. All the earth should be silent in his presence.

“Everyone be silent in the presence of the Lord. He is waking up and setting out from his holy dwelling place.”

Their shame is like the foam on the wild waves of the sea. They are wandering stars for whom gloomy darkness is kept forever.

The woman you saw is the important city which dominates the kings of the earth.”

She gave herself glory and luxury. Now give her just as much torture and misery. She says to herself, ‘I’m a queen on a throne, not a widow. I’ll never be miserable.’

He safeguards the steps of his faithful ones, but wicked people are silenced in darkness because humans cannot succeed by their own strength.
