Lord, people live in spite of such things, and I have the will to live in spite of them. You give me health and keep me alive.

I am close to death. Give me a new life as you promised.

It was good that I had to suffer in order to learn your laws.

I know that your regulations are fair, O Lord, and that you were right to make me suffer.

O Lord, you brought me up from the grave. You called me back to life from among those who had gone into the pit.

Look away from me so that I may smile again before I go away and am no more.

You have made me endure many terrible troubles. You restore me to life again. You bring me back from the depths of the earth.

You greeted the one who gladly does right and remembers your ways. You showed your anger, because we’ve sinned. We’ve continued to sin for a long time. Can we still be saved?

Jesus answered, “Scripture says, ‘A person cannot live on bread alone but on every word that God speaks.’ ”

But when the Lord judges us, he disciplines us so that we won’t be condemned along with the rest of the world.

Our suffering is light and temporary and is producing for us an eternal glory that is greater than anything we can imagine.

So he made you suffer from hunger and then fed you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had seen before. He did this to teach you that a person cannot live on bread alone but on every word that the Lord speaks.

On earth we have fathers who disciplined us, and we respect them. Shouldn’t we place ourselves under the authority of God, the father of spirits, so that we will live?
