Mourn for my people’s land where thorns and briars will grow. Mourn for all the happy homes in a joyful city.

You are a city filled with shouting, a town filled with noise and excitement. Your people weren’t killed with swords. Your dead didn’t die in battle.

Is this your bustling city founded in the distant past? Is this the city that sent its people to settle in distant lands?

The Lord of Armies planned this in order to dishonor all arrogant people and to humiliate all the honored people of the world.

People in the streets call for wine. All joy passes away, and the earth’s happiness is banished.

The fortified city is isolated. The homestead is left deserted, abandoned like the desert. Calves will graze there. They will lie down. They will feed on the branches.

Its palaces are covered with thorns. Its fortresses have nettles and thistles. It will become a home for jackals and a place for ostriches.

A ten-acre vineyard will produce only six gallons of wine, and two quarts of seed will produce only four quarts of grain.”

I will make it a wasteland. It will never be pruned or hoed. Thorns and weeds will grow in it, and I will command the clouds not to rain on it.

Cypress trees will grow where thornbushes grew. Myrtle trees will grow where briars grew. This will be a reminder of the Lord’s name and an everlasting sign that will never be destroyed.

I asked, “How long, O Lord?” And he replied, “Until the cities lie in ruins with no one living in them, the houses have no people, and the land is completely desolate.

On that day, in every place where there were 1,000 vines (worth 1,000 pieces of silver), there will be briars and thorns.

The houses in this city and the palaces of the kings of Judah have been torn down to be used against the dirt ramps and weapons of the Babylonians. This is what the Lord God of Israel says about this:

The Babylonians burned down the royal palace and the people’s homes, and they tore down the walls of Jerusalem.

The king of Babylon executed them at Riblah in the territory of Hamath. So the people of Judah were captives as they left their land.

The illegal worship sites of Aven will be destroyed. Israel sins there. Thorns and weeds will grow over those altars. People will say to the mountains, “Cover us!” and to the hills, “Fall on us!”

If she refuses, I will strip her. I will leave her as naked as the day she was born. I will turn her into a dry and barren land, and she will die of thirst.

Even if they escape without being destroyed, Egypt will capture them and Memphis will bury them. Weeds will grow over their silver treasures. Thorns will grow over their tents.
