The king of Assyria found Hoshea to be a traitor. (Hoshea had sent messengers to King Dais of Egypt and had stopped making annual payments to the king of Assyria.) So the king of Assyria arrested him and put him in prison.

In front of their ancestors he performed miracles in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan.

The leaders of Zoan are nothing but fools. The wisest of Pharaoh’s counselors gives stupid advice. How can you tell Pharaoh, “I’m a descendant of wise men, a descendant of ancient kings”?

You’ve journeyed to the king with perfumed oils and put on plenty of perfume. You’ve sent your ambassadors far away and sent them down to Sheol.

They didn’t listen to the Lord, so they went to Egypt. They went as far as Tahpanhes.

I heard a message from the Lord. A messenger was sent among the nations to say, “Assemble, and attack Edom. Get ready for battle.”

I will destroy Pathros, set fire to Zoan, and bring punishment on Thebes.

At Tahpanhes the day will turn dark when I break Egypt’s power. Egypt’s strong army will be defeated. Clouds will cover Egypt, and people from its villages will go into exile.

They don’t return to the Most High. They are like a defective bow. Their officials will die in battle because they curse. The people in Egypt will ridicule them for this.

This is the vision of Obadiah. This is what the Almighty Lord says about Edom: We have heard a message from the Lord. A messenger was sent among the nations to say, “Get ready! Let’s go to war against Edom.”

They went through the Negev and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai lived. They are descendants of Anak. (Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
