Isaiah 28:1

God's Word

How horrible it will be for the arrogant drunks of Ephraim. Their glorious beauty is ⌞like⌟ a withered flower. They are at the entrance to a fertile valley where they lie drunk from wine.

In the days of King Pekah of Israel, King Tiglath Pileser of Assyria took Ijon, Abel Beth Maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, Galilee, and the entire territory of Naphtali. He also took the people away to Assyria as captives.

In one day Pekah, son of Remaliah, killed 120,000 soldiers in Judah because they had abandoned the Lord God of their ancestors.

Who has trouble? Who has misery? Who has quarrels? Who has a complaint? Who has wounds for no reason? Who has bloodshot eyes?

Priests and prophets stagger from wine and wobble from too much liquor. They stagger from too much liquor and become confused from too much wine. They wobble because of their liquor. They stagger when they see visions. They swerve as they judge.

How horrible it will be for those who get up early to look for a drink, who sit up late until they are drunk from wine.

How horrible it will be for those who are heroes at drinking wine, who are champions at mixing drinks,

Before the boy knows how to say ‘Daddy’ or ‘Mommy,’ the wealth of Damascus and the loot from Samaria will be carried away to the king of Assyria.”

The Lord will set Rezin’s oppressors against Israel and will stir up its enemies—

The Lord sent a message against Jacob. The message is against Israel.

All the people of Ephraim and the people who live in Samaria will know it. With arrogant and conceited hearts they will say,

Prostitutes, old wine, and new wine have robbed them of their senses.

The people of Israel’s arrogance testifies against them. Israel and Ephraim stumble because of their sins, and Judah stumbles with them.

Ephraim will become a wasteland when the time for punishment comes. I will make the truth known among the tribes of Israel.

“I have seen horrible things in the nation of Israel. Ephraim is acting like a prostitute, and Israel is unclean.

On the day of the king’s celebration, the officials become drunk from wine, and the king joins mockers.

I will crush your arrogance. You will have no rain, and your land will be as hard as cement.

You made the Nazirites drink wine. You commanded the prophets to stop prophesying.

Beside every altar, they spread themselves out on clothes taken as security. In the temples of their gods, they drink the wine that they bought with fines.

Listen to this message, you cows of Bashan who live on Mount Samaria. You women oppress the poor and abuse the needy. You say to your husbands, “Get some wine! Let’s drink!”

How horrible it will be for those who are at ease in Zion, for those who feel secure on the mountain of Samaria, and for the heads of the leading nations, to whom the nation of Israel comes.

How horrible it will be for those who sleep on ivory beds. They sprawl out on their couches and eat lambs from their flocks and calves from their stalls.

How horrible it will be for those who drink wine by the jugful. They rub the finest oils all over themselves and are not sorry for the ruin ⌞of the descendants⌟ of Joseph.

The Almighty Lord has sworn an oath on himself. The Lord God of Armies declares: I am disgusted with Jacob’s pride, and I hate his palaces. So I will hand over the city and everything in it.
