Isaiah 27:9

In this way the wrongdoings of the descendants of Jacob are covered up. This is the way they will turn from their sins— when they turn all the altar stones into powdered chalk and no poles dedicated to the goddess Asherah or incense altars are left standing.

Then they brought out the large sacred stone of the temple of Baal and burned it.

Josiah crushed the sacred stones, cut down the poles dedicated to Asherah, and filled their places with human bones.

He burned down the Lord’s temple, the royal palace, and all the houses in Jerusalem. Every important building was burned down.

He got rid of the illegal places of worship and the altars for incense in all the cities of Judah. The kingdom was at peace during his reign.

He had the altars of the various Baal gods torn down. He cut down the incense altars that were above them. He destroyed the Asherah poles, carved idols, and metal idols. He ground them into powder and scattered the powder over the tombs of those who had sacrificed to them.

They burned God’s temple, tore down Jerusalem’s walls, burned down all its palaces, and destroyed everything of value.

Before you made me suffer, I used to wander off, but now I hold on to your word.

It was good that I had to suffer in order to learn your laws.

But tear down their altars, crush their sacred stones, and cut down their poles dedicated to the goddess Asherah.

Brutal beatings cleanse away wickedness. Such beatings cleanse the innermost being.

You will be ashamed of the oaks that you wanted to worship and embarrassed by the garden that you have chosen for your gods.

They won’t look to the altars made by their hands or to the Asherah poles or incense altars which their fingers molded.

Then you will dishonor your silver-plated idols and your gold-covered statues. You will throw them away like clothing ruined by stains. You will say to them, “Get out!”

The Lord will wash away the filth of Zion’s people. He will clean bloodstains from Jerusalem with a spirit of judgment and a spirit of burning.

“Speak tenderly to Jerusalem and announce to it that its time of hard labor is over and its wrongs have been paid for. It has received from the Lord double for all its sins.”

I have refined you, but not like silver. I have tested you in the furnace of suffering.

They will come and remove all the disgusting and detestable things that are there.

I will get rid of rebels and those who do wrong against me. I will bring you out of the land where you are living. You will never enter Israel. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

Your altars will be destroyed, and your incense burners will be smashed. I will kill people in front of your idols.

Some of the wise people will be defeated in order to refine, purify, and make them white until the end times. But the appointed time is still to come.

“The people of Ephraim will have nothing more to do with idols. I will answer them and take care of them. I am like a growing pine tree. Their fruit comes from me.”

I will destroy your worship sites, cut down your incense altars, and pile your dead bodies on top of your dead idols. I will look at you with disgust.

I will destroy the cities in your land and tear down all your fortresses.

“On that day,” declares the Lord of Armies, “I will wipe away the names of the idols from the land. They will no longer be remembered. I will also remove the ⌞false⌟ prophets and the unclean  spirit from the land.

My promise  to them will be fulfilled when I take away their sins.”

But when the Lord judges us, he disciplines us so that we won’t be condemned along with the rest of the world.

Tear down their altars, crush their sacred stones, burn their poles dedicated to the goddess Asherah, cut down their idols, and wipe out the names of their gods from those places.

The Lord disciplines everyone he loves. He severely disciplines everyone he accepts as his child.”
