He punished Israel by sending it away. He removed it with a fierce blast from the east winds.

Listen to the Lord’s word, you Israelites. The Lord has brought these charges against those who live in the land: “There is no faith, no love, and no knowledge of God in the land.

But in anger it was uprooted and thrown to the ground. The east wind dried up its fruit. Its strong branches broke off. They withered and were burned.

Correct me, O Lord, but please be fair. Don’t correct me when you’re angry. Otherwise, you’ll reduce me to nothing.

At that time it will be said to these people and to Jerusalem: “A hot wind from the heights will blow in the desert on the tracks of my people. It will not be a wind that winnows  or cleanses.

You are extremely happy about these things, even though you have to suffer different kinds of trouble for a little while now.

The people of Ephraim have become important among their relatives. However, the Lord’s scorching wind will come from the east. It will blow out of the desert. Then their springs will run dry, and their wells will dry up. The wind will destroy every precious thing in their storehouses.

Don’t be afraid, my servant Jacob,” declares the Lord. “I am with you. I will completely destroy all the nations where I scattered you, but I will not completely destroy you. I will correct you with justice. I won’t let you go entirely unpunished.”

This is what the Lord says: The whole earth will be ruined, although I will not destroy it completely.

There isn’t any temptation that you have experienced which is unusual for humans. God, who faithfully keeps his promises, will not allow you to be tempted beyond your power to resist. But when you are tempted, he will also give you the ability to endure the temptation as your way of escape.

I will not accuse you forever. I will not be angry with you forever. Otherwise, the spirits, the lives of those I’ve made, would grow faint in my presence.

“I abandoned you for one brief moment, but I will bring you back with unlimited compassion.

This is what the Lord says: Where are your mother’s divorce papers? Did I give her any to get rid of her? To which of my creditors did I sell you? You were sold because of your sins. I got rid of your mother because of your rebellion.

When the Lord has finished all his work on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, he will punish the king of Assyria for all his boasting and all his arrogance.

“Why do you still want to be beaten? Why do you continue to rebel? Your whole head is infected. Your whole heart is failing.

He certainly knows what we are made of. He bears in mind that we are dust.

But he is compassionate. He forgave their sin. He did not destroy them. He restrained his anger many times. He did not display all of his fury.

Even angry mortals will praise you. You will wear the remainder of ⌞their⌟ anger.

O Lord, do not angrily punish me or discipline me in your wrath.

O Lord, do not punish me in your anger or discipline me in your rage.

Would he sue me and hide behind great legal maneuvers? No, he certainly would press charges against me.

He will not always accuse us of wrong or be angry ⌞with us⌟ forever.

You greeted the one who gladly does right and remembers your ways. You showed your anger, because we’ve sinned. We’ve continued to sin for a long time. Can we still be saved?

“The Lord will not reject ⌞such⌟ people forever.

Even if he makes us suffer, he will have compassion in keeping with the richness of his mercy.
