All the people in the city will flee at the sound of riders and archers. They will go off into the thickets and climb among the rocks. The entire city will be abandoned, and no one will live in it.

People of Moab, abandon your cities. Live among the cliffs. Be like doves that make their nests at the entrance of a cave.

“Tell them, ‘This is what the Almighty Lord says: As I live, whoever is in the ruined cities will be killed in battle. Whoever is in the open field will become food for wild animals. Whoever is in fortified places and caves will die from plagues.

The illegal worship sites of Aven will be destroyed. Israel sins there. Thorns and weeds will grow over those altars. People will say to the mountains, “Cover us!” and to the hills, “Fall on us!”

They will lick dust like snakes, like animals that crawl on the ground. They will come out of their hiding places trembling. They will turn away from your presence in fear, O Lord our God. They will be afraid of you.

Even you, Nineveh, will stagger like a drunk. You will disappear. Even you will look for a fortress ⌞to escape⌟ from the enemy.

“This is what the Lord of Armies says: Once again, in a little while, I am going to shake the sky and the earth, the sea and the dry land.

I will shake all the nations, and the one whom all the nations desire will come. Then I will fill this house with glory, says the Lord of Armies.

Then people will say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us!’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us!’

They will pay the penalty by being destroyed forever, by being separated from the Lord’s presence and from his glorious power.

The world didn’t deserve these good people. Some wandered around in deserts and mountains and lived in caves and holes in the ground.

When God spoke to your ancestors, his voice shook the earth. But now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the sky.”
