On the day you plant, you will make it grow. On the morning you set out the seedling, you will make it sprout. But the harvest will become a [rotting] pile on a day of grief and incurable pain.

Whenever I saw those who plowed wickedness and planted misery, they gathered its harvest.

In the morning they blossom and sprout. In the evening they wither and dry up.

That time will be like harvesting bundles of grain by the armful. It will be like gathering grain in the Rephaim Valley.

Prophets prophesy lies. Priests rule under the prophets’ directions, and my people love this. But what will you do in the end?”

“The people of Israel plant the wind, but they harvest a storm. A field of grain that doesn’t ripen will never produce any grain. Even if it did produce grain, foreigners would eat it all.

“The people of Ephraim are like sick plants. Their roots are dried up. They have no fruit. Even if they were to have children, I would kill their dear children.”

Seeds shrivel up in their shells. Storehouses are destroyed. Barns are ruined. The grain has dried up.

You will work hard for nothing because your land will produce no crops and the trees will produce no fruit.

Since you are stubborn and don’t want to change the way you think and act, you are adding to the anger that God will have against you on that day when God vents his anger. At that time God will reveal that his decisions are fair.

You will plant vineyards and take care of them, but you won’t drink any wine or gather any grapes, because worms will eat them.
