God's Word

The fields of Heshbon and the vineyards of Sibmah wither. Rulers of the nations have cut off their grapes. The grapevines ⌞once⌟ reached as far as Jazer and strayed out into the desert. Their shoots had spread out over the sea.

You mountains in Gilboa, may there be no dew or rain on you or on your slopes, because warriors’ shields were tarnished there. Saul’s shield was never rubbed with olive oil.

But that’s not what they intend to do. Their minds don’t work that way. Their purpose is to destroy and put an end to many nations.

Heshbon and Elealeh also cry out. Their voices are heard as far away as Jahaz. Moab’s armed men cry out. Their courage is gone.

I will cry for the grapevines of Sibmah as Jazer cries for them. I will drench you with my tears, Heshbon and Elealeh. The shouts of joy for your ripened fruits and your harvest will be silenced.

New wine dries up, and grapevines waste away. All happy people groan.

I will cry for you as Jazer cries. I will cry for you, grapevines of Sibmah. Your branches ⌞once⌟ spread as far as the sea, and they reached as far as the sea of Jazer. The destroyer will destroy your ripened fruits and your grapes.

After Moses sent spies to Jazer, the Israelites captured its cities and villages and forced out the Amorites who were there.

“Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,

Atroth Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,

Nebo, Baal Meon (whose names were changed), and Sibmah. These are the names they gave the cities they rebuilt.

Their territory included Jazer, all the cities of Gilead, and half of Ammon as far as Aroer, which is by Rabbah.
