Isaiah 14:1

God's Word

The Lord will have compassion for Jacob and again choose Israel. He will resettle them in their own country. Foreigners will join them and unite with the descendants of Jacob.

In every province and every city where the king’s message and decree arrived, the Jews were happy and joyful, feasting and enjoying a holiday. Then many common people pretended to be Jews because they were terrified of the Jews.

You will rise and have compassion on Zion, because it is time to grant a favor to it. Indeed, the appointed time has come.

Your servants value Zion’s stones, and they pity its rubble.

In keeping with your mercy, wipe out my enemies and destroy all who torment me, because I am your servant.

He has not forgotten to be merciful and faithful to Israel’s descendants. All the ends of the earth have seen how our God saves ⌞them⌟.

When that day comes, five cities in Egypt will have people that speak the language of Canaan and swear allegiance to the Lord of Armies. One of the cities will be called Heliopolis.

This is the divine revelation about the desert by the sea. Like a storm sweeping through the Negev, an invader will come from the desert, from a terrifying land.

In times to come Jacob will take root. Israel will blossom, bud, and fill the whole world with fruit.

“But you are my servant Israel, Jacob, whom I have chosen, the descendant of Abraham, my dear friend.

I have taken you from the ends of the earth and called you from its most distant places. I said to you, ‘You are my servant. I’ve chosen you; I haven’t rejected you.’

But now listen, my servant Jacob, Israel, whom I have chosen.

This is what the Lord says: The products from Egypt, the merchandise from Sudan, and the important Sabaeans will come to you. They will belong to you. They will follow you. They will come to you in chains. They will bow to you and pray to you, “Certainly God is with you alone, and there is no other God.”

Go, sit in the dirt, virgin princess of Babylon! Sit on the ground, not on a throne, princess of the Babylonians! You will no longer be called soft and delicate.

They will never be hungry or thirsty, nor will the sun or the burning, hot wind strike them. The one who has compassion on them will lead them and guide them to springs.

Sing with joy, you heavens! Rejoice, you earth! Break into shouts of joy, you mountains! The Lord has comforted his people and will have compassion on his humble people.

Can a woman forget her nursing child? Will she have no compassion on the child from her womb? Although mothers may forget, I will not forget you.

This is what the Lord says: Prisoners will be freed from mighty men. Loot will be taken away from tyrants. I will fight your enemies, and I will save your children.

The Lord is the defender of Israel, its Holy One. This is what the Lord says to the despised one, to the one scorned by the nation, to the slave of rulers: Kings will see ⌞you⌟ and stand. Princes will see ⌞you⌟ and bow. The Lord is faithful. The Holy One of Israel has chosen you.

You will spread out to the right and left. Your descendants will take over other nations, and they will resettle deserted cities.

Let wicked people abandon their ways. Let evil people abandon their thoughts. Let them return to the Lord, and he will show compassion to them. Let them return to our God, because he will freely forgive them.

Foreigners who have joined the Lord should not say, “The Lord will separate us from his people.” Castrated men should not say, “We’re only dead trees!”

“Foreigners will rebuild your walls, and their kings will serve you. In my anger I struck you, but in my favor I have compassion on you.

The descendants of those who oppress you will bow in front of you. All who despise you will bow at your feet. They will call you the city of the Lord, Zion, the city of the Holy One of Israel.

They will bring all your relatives from every nation like a grain offering to the Lord. “They will come on horses, in chariots, in wagons, on mules and camels to my holy mountain, Jerusalem,” declares the Lord. They will come like the people of Israel who bring their grain offerings in clean dishes to the Lord’s temple.

But they will say, ‘The Lord brought the people of Israel out of the land of the north and all the lands where he had scattered them. As the Lord lives….’ They will say this because I will bring them back to the land that I gave their ancestors.

I will let you find me, declares the Lord. I will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I’ve scattered you, declares the Lord. I will bring you back from the place where you are being held captive.

“On that day,” declares the Lord of Armies, “I will break the yokes  off your necks and tear off your ropes. Foreigners will no longer make you serve them.

Once again I will build you up, and you will be rebuilt, my dear people Israel. Once again you will take your tambourines, and you will go dancing with happy people.

This is what the Lord of Armies says: All the people of Israel and Judah are oppressed. All their enemies have captured them. They refuse to let them go.

We have been put to shame, and we have been disgraced. Shame covers our faces, because foreigners have gone into the holy places of the Lord’s temple.

I will remember the promise that I made with you when you were young, and I will make it a promise that will last forever.

Divide it by drawing lots. This land will be for you. It will also be for the foreign residents who live among you and have given birth to children while they lived with you. Think of them as Israelites. They will draw lots with you for their inheritance among the tribes of Israel.

“Announce again: This is what the Lord of Armies says: My cities will overflow with prosperity once more. The Lord will again comfort Zion and will again choose Jerusalem.”

“From the nations where the sun rises to the nations where the sun sets, my name will be great. Incense and pure offerings will be offered everywhere in my name, because my name will be great among the nations,” says the Lord of Armies.

“He remembered to help his servant Israel forever.

He is a light that will reveal ⌞salvation⌟ to the nations and bring glory to your people Israel.”
