“Your country is devastated. Your cities are burned down. Your fields are destroyed right before your eyes by foreigners. Your fields are devastated and taken over by foreigners.

Though you are destroyed and demolished and your land is in ruins, you will be too crowded for ⌞your⌟ people now. Those who devoured you will be long gone.

Then lambs will graze as if they were in their own pasture, and foreigners will eat among the ruins of the rich.

With my own ears I heard the Lord of Armies say, “Many houses will become empty. Large, beautiful houses will be without people to live in them.

I asked, “How long, O Lord?” And he replied, “Until the cities lie in ruins with no one living in them, the houses have no people, and the land is completely desolate.

“You have been abandoned and hated; no one has passed through you. But now I will make you a source of everlasting pride, a joy for all generations.

The Lord has sworn with his right hand and with his mighty arm, “I will never again let your enemies eat your grain, nor will foreigners drink the new wine which you made.”

Your holy cities have become a desert. Zion has become a desert. Jerusalem is a wasteland.

Surely wickedness burns like fire. It burns up briars and thorns. It sets the underbrush in the forest on fire, and it whirls upward in clouds of smoke.

Every warrior’s boot marching to the sound of battle and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel in the fire.

Young lions have roared very loudly at them. Young lions have turned the land into a wasteland. The cities have been burned down, and everyone has left.

A lion has come out of its lair. A destroyer of nations has set out. He has left his place to destroy your land. Your cities will be ruined, and no one will live in them.

That is why my fury and anger were poured out and continued to burn in the cities of Judah and on the streets of Jerusalem. So they became the desolate ruin that they are today.

Pay attention to my warning, Jerusalem, or I will turn away from you. I will make your land desolate, a land where no one will live.

In the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, I will banish the sounds of joy and happiness and the sounds of brides and grooms, because the land will be a wasteland.”

“The land we inherited has been turned over to strangers. Our homes have been turned over to foreigners.

That is why I’m going to hand you over to the people in the east. They will possess your land. They will set up their camps and pitch their tents among you. They will eat your crops and drink your milk.

I will dry up the Nile River and sell the land to wicked people. I will have foreigners destroy the land and everything in it. I, the Lord, have spoken.

Foreigners are using up your strength, but you don’t realize it. You have become a gray-haired, old man, but you don’t realize it.

“The people of Israel plant the wind, but they harvest a storm. A field of grain that doesn’t ripen will never produce any grain. Even if it did produce grain, foreigners would eat it all.

I will scatter you among the nations. War will follow you. Your country will be in ruins. Your cities will be deserted.

“Then the land will enjoy its time ⌞to honor the Lord⌟ while it lies deserted and you are in your enemies’ land. Then the land will joyfully celebrate its time ⌞to honor the Lord⌟.

I will destroy the cities in your land and tear down all your fortresses.

I have begun to strike you with heavy blows and to ruin you because of your sins.

People you never knew will eat what your land and your hard work have produced. As long as you live, you will know nothing but oppression and abuse.

The ⌞standard of living for the⌟ foreigners who live among you will rise higher and higher, while your ⌞standard of living⌟ will sink lower and lower.

They will see all the soil poisoned with sulfur and salt. Nothing will be planted. Nothing will be growing. There will be no plants in sight. It will be as desolate as Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, cities the Lord destroyed in fierce anger.
