You will be ashamed of the oaks that you wanted to worship and embarrassed by the garden that you have chosen for your gods.

Then you will dishonor your silver-plated idols and your gold-covered statues. You will throw them away like clothing ruined by stains. You will say to them, “Get out!”

When that day comes, all of you will reject the silver and gold idols that your sinful hands have made.

Then those who trust idols and those who say to statues, “You are our gods” will be turned away and put to shame.

Those who make idols will be ashamed and disgraced. They will go away completely disgraced.

You burn with lust under oak trees and under every large tree. You slaughter children in the valleys and under the cracks in the rocks.

These people constantly and openly provoked me. They offered sacrifices in gardens and burnt incense on brick altars.

People make themselves holy and prepare themselves for their garden rituals. They go into the garden and devour pork, disgusting things, and mice. “They will come to an end at the same time,” declares the Lord.

“Long ago you broke off your yoke, tore off your chains, and said that you wouldn’t be a slave. You lay down and acted like a prostitute on every high hill and under every large tree.

When Josiah was king, the Lord asked me, “Did you see what unfaithful Israel did? She went up every high mountain and under every large tree, and she acted like a prostitute there.

You will remember and be ashamed. You will never again open your mouth because of your disgrace when I forgive you for everything you did, declares the Almighty Lord.’ ”

Then you will remember your evil ways and the bad things that you did, and you will hate yourselves for all these wicked and disgusting things.

Then you will know that I am the Lord. “ ‘Those who are killed will lie beside the idols around their altars. They will lie on every high hill, on all the mountaintops, and under every large tree and every leafy oak. These are the places where they made offerings to their disgusting idols.

Assyria cannot save us. We won’t ride on horses anymore. We will never again say that the things our hands have made are our gods. You love orphans.”

“The people of Ephraim will have nothing more to do with idols. I will answer them and take care of them. I am like a growing pine tree. Their fruit comes from me.”

They offer sacrifices on mountaintops, and they burn incense on the hills under oaks, poplars, and other trees. They think that these trees provide good shade. “That is why your daughters become prostitutes, and your daughters-in-law commit adultery.

The wind will carry them away in its wings, and their sacrifices will bring them shame.

What did you gain by doing those things? You’re ashamed of what you used to do because it ended in death.
