God's Word

Even if they escape without being destroyed, Egypt will capture them and Memphis will bury them. Weeds will grow over their silver treasures. Thorns will grow over their tents.

Mourn for my people’s land where thorns and briars will grow. Mourn for all the happy homes in a joyful city.

Its palaces are covered with thorns. Its fortresses have nettles and thistles. It will become a home for jackals and a place for ostriches.

I will make it a wasteland. It will never be pruned or hoed. Thorns and weeds will grow in it, and I will command the clouds not to rain on it.

On that day, in every place where there were 1,000 vines (worth 1,000 pieces of silver), there will be briars and thorns.

People from Noph and Tahpanhes have cracked your skulls, Israel.

But now, you need to know that you will die in wars, famines, or plagues in the place where you want to go and live.”

The Lord spoke his word to Jeremiah about all the Jews living in Egypt at Migdol, Tahpanhes, Noph, and Pathros.

I will take away from Judah those who are left, those who were determined to go to live in Egypt. They will die in Egypt. All of them, from the least important to the most important, will die in wars or be brought to an end by famines. They will become something cursed, ridiculed, and disgraced.

I will punish those living in Egypt as I punished Jerusalem with wars, famines, and plagues.

“Tell this in Egypt; announce this in Migdol. Make it known in Memphis and in Tahpanhes. Say, ‘Take your positions, and get ready. Swords will kill those around you.’

Pack your bags, inhabitants of Egypt, because you will be taken away as captives. Memphis will become a dreary wasteland, a pile of rubble where no one lives.

“ ‘This is what the Almighty Lord says: I will destroy the statues and put an end to the idols in Memphis. A prince will never rise again in Egypt. I will spread fear throughout Egypt.

I will set fire to Egypt. Sin will be in much pain. Thebes will be broken into pieces, and Memphis will be in trouble every day.

The illegal worship sites of Aven will be destroyed. Israel sins there. Thorns and weeds will grow over those altars. People will say to the mountains, “Cover us!” and to the hills, “Fall on us!”

They will come trembling like birds from Egypt and like doves from Assyria. I will settle them in their own homes,” declares the Lord.

“That is why I will block her way with thornbushes and build a wall so that she can’t get through.

Ephraim, you are like a silly, senseless dove. You call for Egypt and run to Assyria for help.

“How horrible it will be for these people. They have run away from me. They must be destroyed because they’ve rebelled against me. I want to reclaim them, but they tell lies about me.

They don’t return to the Most High. They are like a defective bow. Their officials will die in battle because they curse. The people in Egypt will ridicule them for this.

They offer sacrifices to me and eat the meat of sacrifices, but I, the Lord, do not accept these sacrifices. Now I will remember their wickedness and punish them because of their sins. They will go back to Egypt.

The people of Ephraim won’t stay in the Lord’s land. They will return to Egypt, and they will eat unclean  food in Assyria.

I will scatter you among the nations. War will follow you. Your country will be in ruins. Your cities will be deserted.

“Howl, inhabitants of the Mortar, because all the merchants will be destroyed and all who handle money will be killed.

When the Israelites saw they were in trouble because the army was hard-pressed, they hid in caves, in thorny thickets, among rocks, in pits, and in cisterns.
