Then they will not be like their ancestors, a stubborn and rebellious generation. Their hearts were not loyal. Their spirits were not faithful to God.

He will wrap you up tightly like a turban. He will throw you far away into another land. There you will die. There your splendid chariots will remain. There you will become a disgrace to your master’s household.

The Lord will give you rain for the seed that you plant in the ground, and the food that the ground provides will be rich and nourishing. When that day comes, your cattle will graze in large pastures.

Then lambs will graze as if they were in their own pasture, and foreigners will eat among the ruins of the rich.

Do something, Lord, for the sake of your name, even though our sins testify against us. We have been unfaithful and have sinned against you.

Then the Lord said to me, “Unfaithful Israel was less guilty than treacherous Judah.

When Josiah was king, the Lord asked me, “Did you see what unfaithful Israel did? She went up every high mountain and under every large tree, and she acted like a prostitute there.

Judah saw that I sent unfaithful Israel away because of her adultery and that I gave Israel her divorce papers. But treacherous Judah, her sister, wasn’t afraid. She also acted like a prostitute.

“I have certainly heard Ephraim mourn and say, ‘You disciplined me, and I was disciplined. I was like a young, untrained calf. Turn me, and I will be turned, because you are the Lord my God.

That is why a lion from the forest will attack them. A wolf from the wilderness will destroy them. A leopard will lie in ambush outside their cities. All who leave the cities will be torn to pieces, because they rebel so often and they become more and more unfaithful.

But they didn’t obey me or pay attention to me. They followed their own plans and their stubborn, evil ways. They went backward and not forward.

The people of Jerusalem turned away from me without ever returning. They still cling to deceit. They refuse to return.

“Ephraim is like a trained calf that loves to thresh  grain. I will put a yoke  on its beautiful neck. I will harness Ephraim. Judah must plow. Jacob must break up the ground.

War will sweep through their cities, demolish their city gates, and put an end to their plans.

My people are determined to turn away from me. Even if they call to the Most High, he will not pardon them.

I will scatter you among the nations. War will follow you. Your country will be in ruins. Your cities will be deserted.

“But people refused to pay attention. They shrugged their shoulders at me and shut their ears so that they couldn’t hear.
