Hosea 13:2

God's Word

They keep on sinning more and more. They make idols from silver for themselves. These idols are skillfully made. All of them are the work of craftsmen. People say this about the Israelites: “They offer human sacrifices and kiss calf-shaped idols.”

But I still have 7,000 people in Israel whose knees have not knelt to worship Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.”

They said to the army, “Don’t bring the prisoners here. You’ll make us responsible for this sin against the Lord. Do you intend to add to all our sins? The Lord is very angry with Israel because we have already sinned.”

The Lord declares, “How horrible it will be for those rebellious children. They carry out plans, but not mine. They make alliances against my will. They pile sin on top of sin.

Everyone associated with the gods will be put to shame. The craftsmen themselves are only human. Let them all get together and take their stand. They will be frightened and ashamed together.

Come here, you refugees from the nations. Ignorant people carry wooden idols and pray to gods that cannot save ⌞anyone⌟.

People pour gold out of their bags and weigh silver on scales. They hire a goldsmith. He makes it into a god. They bow down and worship it.

Remember this, and take courage. Recall your rebellious acts.

Craftsmen decorate them with silver and gold and fasten them ⌞together⌟ with hammers and nails so that they won’t fall over.

They are complete idiots. They learn nonsense from wooden idols.

The people of Jerusalem turned away from me without ever returning. They still cling to deceit. They refuse to return.

The people of Israel are like vines that used to produce fruit. The more fruit they produced, the more altars they built. The more their land produced, the more stone markers they set up ⌞to honor other gods⌟.

Those who live in Samaria fear the calf-shaped idol at Beth Aven. The people will mourn over it. The priests will cry loudly because its glory will be taken away into captivity.

The more I called them, the farther they went away. They sacrificed to other gods—the Baals, and they burned incense to idols.

War will sweep through their cities, demolish their city gates, and put an end to their plans.

Assyria cannot save us. We won’t ride on horses anymore. We will never again say that the things our hands have made are our gods. You love orphans.”

“She doesn’t believe that I gave her grain, new wine, and olive oil. I gave her plenty of silver and gold, but she used it to make statues of Baal.

The people of Ephraim have chosen to worship idols. Leave them alone!

“They chose their own kings, kings I didn’t approve. They chose their own princes, princes I didn’t know. They chose to make idols with their own silver and gold. Because of this, they will be destroyed.

Get rid of your calf-shaped idol, Samaria. My anger burns against these people. How long will they remain unclean?

Samaria’s calf-shaped idol was made in Israel. Skilled workers made it. It is not a god. It will be smashed to pieces.

“You’re just like your parents! You’re a bunch of sinners trying to make the Lord angry with Israel again.

But what was God’s reply? God said, “I’ve kept 7,000 people for myself who have not knelt to worship Baal.”

Since you are stubborn and don’t want to change the way you think and act, you are adding to the anger that God will have against you on that day when God vents his anger. At that time God will reveal that his decisions are fair.

But evil people and phony preachers will go from bad to worse as they mislead people and are themselves misled.

Samuel took a flask of olive oil, poured it on Saul’s head, kissed him, and said, “The Lord has anointed you to be ruler of his people Israel. You will rule his people and save them from all their enemies. This will be the sign that the Lord has anointed you  to be ruler of his people.
