“When Israel was a child, I loved him, and I called my son out of Egypt.

‘You have seen for yourselves what I did to Egypt and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to my mountain.

Then tell Pharaoh, ‘This is what the Lord says: Israel is my firstborn son.

I told you to let my son go so that he may worship me. But you refused to let him go. So now I’m going to kill your firstborn son.’ ”

Since you are precious to me, you are honored and I love you. I will exchange others for you. Nations will be the price I pay for your life.

“I have abandoned my nation. I have left my own people. I have handed the people I love over to their enemies.

“Go and announce to Jerusalem, ‘This is what the Lord says: I remember the unfailing loyalty of your youth, the love you had for me as a bride. I remember how you followed me into the desert, into a land that couldn’t be farmed.

With all the disgusting things that you did and all your acts of prostitution, you didn’t remember the time when you were young. You didn’t remember when you were naked and bare, kicking around in your own blood.

“ ‘Then I went by you and saw you kicking around in your own blood. I said to you, “Live.”

This is what will happen to you, Bethel, because you have done many wicked things. At daybreak, the king of Israel will be completely destroyed.

The Lord used a prophet to bring the people of Israel out of Egypt. He used a prophet to take care of them.

I am the Lord your God. I brought you out of Egypt. I will make you live in tents again as you did during your appointed festivals.

“I am the Lord your God. I brought you out of Egypt. You have known no god besides me. There is no savior except me.

I will give her vineyards there. I will make the valley of Achor [Disaster] a door of hope. Then she will respond as she did when she was young, as she did when she came out of Egypt.

“I loved you,” says the Lord. “But you ask, ‘How did you love us?’ “Wasn’t Esau Jacob’s brother?” declares the Lord. “I loved Jacob,

He stayed there until Herod died. What the Lord had spoken through the prophet came true: “I have called my son out of Egypt.”

You certainly love your people. All your holy ones are in your hands. They bow at your feet to receive your instructions.

The Lord set his heart on you and chose you, even though you didn’t outnumber all the other people. You were the smallest of all nations.
