You have planted wickedness and harvested evil. You have eaten the fruit that your lies produced. You have trusted your own power and your many warriors.

Whenever I saw those who plowed wickedness and planted misery, they gathered its harvest.

No king achieves a victory with a large army. No warrior rescues himself by his own great strength.

“Look at this person who refused to make God his fortress! Instead, he trusted his great wealth and became strong through his greed.”

Do not count on extortion ⌞to make you rich⌟. Do not hope to gain anything through robbery. When riches increase, do not depend on them.

They will eat the fruit of their lifestyle. They will be stuffed with their own schemes.

The word of truth lasts forever, but lies last only a moment.

A person eats well as a result of his speaking ability, but the appetite of treacherous people ⌞craves⌟ violence.

A lying witness will not go unpunished. One who tells lies will not escape.

Whoever plants injustice will harvest trouble, and this weapon of his own fury will be destroyed.

I saw something else under the sun. The race isn’t ⌞won⌟ by fast runners, or the battle by heroes. Wise people don’t necessarily have food. Intelligent people don’t necessarily have riches, and skilled people don’t necessarily receive special treatment. But time and unpredictable events overtake all of them.

On the day you plant, you will make it grow. On the morning you set out the seedling, you will make it sprout. But the harvest will become a [rotting] pile on a day of grief and incurable pain.

“Ephraim surrounds me with lies. The nation of Israel surrounds me with deceit.” Judah rebels against God, against the Holy One who is faithful.

There is cursing, lying, murdering, stealing, and adultery. People break ⌞my laws⌟, and there is one murder after another.

They feed on the sins of my people, and they want them to do wicked things.

“They make kings happy with the wicked things they do. They make officials happy with the lies they tell.

“The people of Israel plant the wind, but they harvest a storm. A field of grain that doesn’t ripen will never produce any grain. Even if it did produce grain, foreigners would eat it all.

Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom are you pursuing? A dead dog? One flea?
