So the king said to the prophet Nathan, “Look, I’m living in a house made of cedar, while the ark of God remains in the tent.”

Then Elisha said to him, “I went with you in spirit when the man turned around in his chariot to speak to you. How could you accept silver, clothes, olive orchards, vineyards, sheep, cattle, or slaves?

Your servants value Zion’s stones, and they pity its rubble.

They burned your holy place to the ground. They dishonored the place where you live among us.

Then I will do to this temple what I did to Shiloh. I will turn this city into something that will be cursed by all the nations on earth.’ ”

“This is what the Lord says: You have said that this place is ruined and that no people or animals live in it. It’s true! The cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem are deserted. No people or animals live there. But once again you will hear

“This is what the Lord of Armies says: In this deserted place, where no people or animals live, and in all its cities, there will once again be pastures where shepherds can rest their flocks.

He burned down the Lord’s temple, the royal palace, and all the houses in Jerusalem. Every important building was burned down.

The Lord rejected his altar and disowned his holy place. He handed the walls of Zion’s palaces over to its enemies. The enemies made noise in the Lord’s temple as though it were a festival day.

“Look how the gold has become tarnished! The fine gold has changed! The sacred stones are scattered at every street corner.

‘Tell the nation of Israel, “This is what the Almighty Lord says: I’m going to dishonor my holy place. You brag that my holy place gives you strength. It’s the thing you love the most. It’s your hearts’ desire. So the sons and daughters that you left behind will die in battle.

In the fifth year you may eat the fruit. Do this to make the trees produce more for you. I am the Lord your God.

Because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a pile of rubble, and the temple mountain will become a worship site covered with trees.

Then the Lord spoke his word through the prophet Haggai. He said,

Now, this is what the Lord of Armies says: Carefully consider your ways!

“You expected a lot, but you received a little. When you bring something home, I blow it away. Why?” declares the Lord of Armies. “It’s because my house lies in ruins while each of you is busy working on your own house.

But first, be concerned about his kingdom and what has his approval. Then all these things will be provided for you.

Everyone else looks after his own interests, not after those of Jesus Christ.
