Also because wine is treacherous he is arrogant and never rests. He has a large appetite like the grave. He is like death—never satisfied. He gathers all the nations to himself. He collects all the people to himself.

You certainly defeated Edom, and now you have become arrogant. Enjoy your fame, but stay home. Why must you invite disaster and your own defeat and take Judah with you?”

Even though the Lord is high above, he sees humble people ⌞close up⌟, and he recognizes arrogant people from a distance.

Wine ⌞makes people⌟ mock, liquor ⌞makes them⌟ noisy, and everyone under their influence is unwise.

An arrogant, conceited person is called a mocker. His arrogance knows no limits.

Hell and decay are never satisfied, and a person’s eyes are never satisfied.

Whoever loves money will never be satisfied with money. Whoever loves wealth will never be satisfied with more income. Even this is pointless.

They struck the people with fury, with blows that didn’t stop. They ruled nations in anger, persecuting them without restraint.

We’ve heard of the arrogance of Moab’s people. They are very arrogant. We’ve heard of their boasting, arrogance, and conceit, but their boasts aren’t true.

Then arrogant people will be brought down, and high and mighty people will be humbled. On that day the Lord alone will be honored.

Set the table. Spread the rugs ⌞by the table⌟. Eat. Drink. Get up, you leaders! Prepare your shields for battle!

That is why the grave’s appetite increases. It opens its mouth very wide so that honored people and common people will go down into it. Those who are noisy and joyous will go down into it.

How horrible it will be for you who acquire house after house and buy field after field until there’s nothing left and you have to live by yourself in the land.

so I’m going to send for all the families from the north. I will also send for my servant King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, declares the Lord. I will bring the families from the north to attack this land, its people, and all these surrounding nations. I’m going to destroy them and turn them into something terrible, something ridiculed, and something permanently ruined.

“Call together the archers, the soldiers with bows, against Babylon. Set up blockades around it. Don’t let anyone escape. Pay the people of Babylon back for what they have done. Do to them what they did to others. They have disobeyed the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.

When they are excited, I will prepare a feast for them and make them drunk so that they will shout and laugh. They will fall into a deep sleep and never wake up again, declares the Lord.

The Babylonians pull them all up with fishhooks, drag them away in nets, and gather them in dragnets. So they rejoice and are happy.

Will they keep on emptying their nets and always kill nations without mercy?

“Look at the proud person. He is not right in himself. But the righteous person will live because of his faithfulness.

Also, make it your goal to live quietly, do your work, and earn your own living, as we ordered you.

But God shows us even more kindness. Scripture says, “God opposes arrogant people, but he is kind to humble people.”
