God's Word

The Lord was sorry that he had made humans on the earth, and he was heartbroken.

So he said, “I will wipe off the face of the earth these humans that I created. I will wipe out not only humans, but also domestic animals, crawling animals, and birds. I’m sorry that I made them.”

But when the Messenger stretched out his arm to destroy Jerusalem, the Lord changed his mind about the disaster. “Enough!” he said to the Messenger who was destroying the people. “Put down your weapon.” The Messenger of the Lord was at the threshing floor  of Araunah the Jebusite.

God also sent a Messenger to Jerusalem to destroy it, but as he was destroying it, the Lord reconsidered and changed his mind about the disaster. “Enough!” he said to the destroying Messenger. “Put down your weapon.” The Messenger of the Lord was standing by the threshing floor  of Ornan the Jebusite.

He remembered his promise  to them. In keeping with his rich mercy, he changed his plans.

The Lord has taken an oath and will not change his mind: “You are a priest forever, in the way Melchizedek was a priest.”

I have seen traitors, and I am filled with disgust. They have not accepted your promise.

How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness! How often they caused him grief in the desert!

If only my people would listen to me! If only Israel would follow me!

For 40 years I was disgusted with those people. So I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts continue to stray. They have not learned my ways.’

So the Lord reconsidered his threat to destroy his people.

If only you had listened to my commands! Your peace would be like a river ⌞that never runs dry⌟. Your righteousness would be like waves on the sea.

But they rebelled and offended his Holy Spirit. So he turned against them as their enemy; he fought against them.

“At one time I may threaten to tear up, break down, and destroy a nation or a kingdom.

Did Judah’s King Hezekiah and all the people of Judah put Micah to death? No! Hezekiah feared the Lord and sought the Lord’s favor. So the Lord changed his plan about the disaster he intended to bring on them. But we are about to bring a bigger disaster on ourselves.”

“Tell them, ‘As I live, declares the Almighty Lord, I don’t want wicked people to die. Rather, I want them to turn from their ways and live. Change the way you think and act! Turn from your wicked ways! Do you want to die, people of Israel?’

“How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboim? I have changed my mind. I am deeply moved.

Tear your hearts, not your clothes. Return to the Lord your God. He is merciful and compassionate, patient, and always ready to forgive and to change his plans about disaster.

God saw what they did. He saw that they turned from their wicked ways. So God reconsidered his threat to destroy them, and he didn’t do it.

“I, the Lord, never change. That is why you descendants of Jacob haven’t been destroyed yet.

God is not like people. He tells no lies. He is not like humans. He doesn’t change his mind. When he says something, he does it. When he makes a promise, he keeps it.

God never changes his mind when he gives gifts or when he calls someone.

Don’t give God’s Holy Spirit any reason to be upset with you. He has put his seal on you for the day you will be set free ⌞from the world of sin⌟.

If only they were wise enough to understand this and realize what will happen to them!

The Lord will judge his people and have compassion on his servants when he sees that their strength is gone and that no one is left, neither slaves nor free people.

If only they would fear me and obey all my commandments as long as they live! Then things would go well for them and their children forever.

although they had seen what I had done for 40 years. That is why I was angry with those people. So I said, ‘Their hearts continue to stray, and they have not learned my ways.’

With whom was God angry for 40 years? He was angry with those who sinned and died in the desert.

Every good present and every perfect gift comes from above, from the Father who made the sun, moon, and stars. The Father doesn’t change like the shifting shadows produced by the sun and the moon.

“I regret that I made Saul king. He turned away from me and did not carry out my instructions.” Samuel was angry, and he prayed to the Lord all night.

In addition, the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind, because he is not a mortal who changes his mind.”

Samuel didn’t see Saul again before he died, though Samuel mourned over Saul. And the Lord regretted that he had made Saul king of Israel.
