About three months later Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar has been acting like a prostitute. What’s more, because of it she’s pregnant.” Judah ordered, “Bring her out to be burned.”

Judah saw that I sent unfaithful Israel away because of her adultery and that I gave Israel her divorce papers. But treacherous Judah, her sister, wasn’t afraid. She also acted like a prostitute.

“ ‘But you trusted your beauty, and you used your fame to become a prostitute. You had sex with everyone who walked by.

You also built worship sites at the head of every street. You used your beauty to seduce people there. You offered your body to everyone who passed by. You increased your acts of prostitution.

You had sex with your lustful neighbors, the Egyptians. You used your prostitution to make me angry.

“ ‘You had sex with the Assyrians because you weren’t satisfied. You still weren’t satisfied.

They will burn your houses and punish you in the presence of many women. I will put an end to your prostitution, and you will no longer pay others.

She remembered how she had been a prostitute in Egypt when she was young. So she took part in even more prostitution.

Men slept with her. They slept with those sinful women, Oholah and Oholibah just as they slept with a prostitute.

Oholah acted like a prostitute, although she was my wife. She lusted after her Assyrian lovers who lived nearby.

Their mother acted like a prostitute. The woman who became pregnant with them did shameful things. She said, ‘I’ll chase after my lovers. They will give me food and water, wool and linen, olive oil and wine.’

Then I told her, “You must wait for me a long time. Don’t be a prostitute or offer yourself to any man. I will wait for you.”

“Israel, you act like a prostitute. Don’t let Judah become guilty too. Don’t go to Gilgal. Don’t go to Beth Aven. Don’t take the oath, ‘As the Lord lives. …’

“If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife or with his neighbor’s wife, both he and the woman must be put to death for their adultery.

When a priest’s daughter dishonors herself by becoming a prostitute, she dishonors her father. She must be burned.

So whatever you believe about these things, keep it between yourself and God. The person who does what he knows is right shouldn’t feel guilty. He is blessed.

Parents must never be put to death for the crimes of their children, and children must never be put to death for the crimes of their parents. Each person must be put to death for his own crime.

But she was unfaithful to him. She left him and went to her father’s home, to Bethlehem in Judah. When she had been there four months,
