“Let’s not have any bloodshed. Put him into that cistern that’s out in the desert, but don’t hurt him.” Reuben wanted to rescue Joseph from them and bring him back to his father.

“Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you did not refuse to give me your son, your only son.”

When Reuben heard this, he tried to save Joseph from their plot. “Let’s not kill him,” he said.

So when Joseph reached his brothers, they stripped him of his special robe with long sleeves.

Reuben said to them, “Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the boy? But you wouldn’t listen. Now we must pay for this bloodshed.”

God didn’t harm these leaders of the Israelites. So they saw God, and then they ate and drank.

Even when Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he refused to listen to them.

Pilate saw that he was not getting anywhere. Instead, a riot was breaking out. So Pilate took some water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. He said, “I won’t be guilty of killing this man. Do what you want!”

About that time King Herod devoted his attention to mistreating certain members of the church.

You must put them to death. You must start the execution. Then all the other people will join you in putting them to death.
