Israel then said to Joseph, “Your brothers are taking care of the flocks at Shechem. I’m going to send you to them.” Joseph responded, “I’ll go.”
“Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What should I do? I’ll send my son, whom I love. They’ll probably respect him.’
“I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves. So be as cunning as snakes but as innocent as doves.
Then Eli called Samuel. “Samuel, my son!” he said. “Here I am,” he responded.
The Lord called Samuel a third time. Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said, “Here I am. You called me.” Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy.
He went to his father and said, “Father?” “Yes?” he answered. “Who are you, Son?”
When Isaac was old and going blind, he called his older son Esau and said to him, “Son!” Esau answered, “Here I am.”
Later God tested Abraham and called to him, “Abraham!” “Yes, here I am!” he answered.
So having come from Paddan Aram, Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem in Canaan. He camped within sight of the city.
His brothers had gone to take care of their father’s flocks at Shechem.
But the Messenger of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Yes?” he answered.
