I will also give you as many descendants as the dust of the earth. If anyone could count the dust of the earth, then he could also count your descendants.

He took Abram outside and said, “Now look up at the sky and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” He also said to him, “That’s how many descendants you will have!”

Abraham looked up, and suddenly he saw three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran to meet them, and he bowed with his face touching the ground.

I will certainly bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and the grains of sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of their enemies’ cities.

Then their father Israel said to them, “If that’s the way it has to be, then take the man a gift. Put some of the best products of the land in your bags. Take a little balm, a little honey, gum, myrrh, pistachio nuts, and almonds.

When Joseph came home, they gave him the gifts they had brought to the house. Then they bowed to him with their faces touching the ground.

That is why I positioned people by their families behind the wall where it was lowest and most exposed. The people were armed with swords, spears, and bows.

A bribe seems ⌞like⌟ a jewel to the one who gives it. Wherever he turns, he prospers.

A gift opens doors for the one who gives it and brings him into the presence of great people.

Many try to win the kindness of a generous person, and everyone is a friend to a person who gives gifts.

A gift ⌞given⌟ in secret calms anger, and a secret bribe calms great fury.

Here is a gift I am bringing to you. May it be given to the young men who are in your service.

Ask your young men, and let them tell you. Be kind to my young men, since we have come on a special occasion. Please give us and your son David anything you can ⌞spare⌟.’ ”
