Sarai, Abram’s wife, was not able to have children. She owned an Egyptian slave named Hagar.

Hagar gave birth to Abram’s son. Abram named him Ishmael.

I have heard your request about Ishmael. Yes, I will bless him, make him fertile, and increase the number of his descendants. He will be the father of 12 princes, and I will make him a great nation.

The child grew and was weaned. On the day Isaac was weaned, Abraham held a big feast.

So the messengers went from city to city in the territories of Ephraim and Manasseh, as far as Zebulun. But the people ridiculed them.

But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his words, and made fun of his prophets until the Lord became angry with his people. He could no longer heal them.

“But now those who are younger than I am laugh at me. I didn’t think their fathers were fit to sit with the dogs of my flock.

Yet, I am a worm and not a man. I am scorned by humanity and despised by people.

With a shattering blow to my bones, my enemies taunt me. They ask me all day long, “Where is your God?”

Even a child makes himself known by his actions, whether his deeds are pure or right.

Drive out a mocker, and conflict will leave. Quarreling and abuse will stop.

“Now, during its suffering and oppression, Jerusalem remembers all the treasures it had from ancient times, when its people fell into the power of their enemies with no one to help them. Their opponents looked on, and they laughed at Jerusalem’s downfall.

Scripture says that Abraham had two sons, one by a woman who was a slave and the other by a free woman.

Furthermore, at that time the son who was conceived in a natural way persecuted the son conceived in a spiritual way. That’s exactly what’s happening now.

Some were made fun of and whipped, and some were chained and put in prison.
