Then Abraham said to God, “Why not let Ishmael be my heir?”

Immediately, Abraham bowed with his face touching the ground. He laughed as he thought to himself, “Can a son be born to a hundred-year-old man? Can Sarah, a ninety-year-old woman, have a child?”

God replied, “No! Your wife Sarah will give you a son, and you will name him Isaac [He Laughs]. I will make an everlasting promise to him and his descendants.

Abraham was upset by this because of his son Ishmael.

When you farm the ground, it will no longer yield its best for you. You will be a fugitive, a wanderer on the earth.”

You have forced me off this land today. I have to hide from you and become a fugitive, a wanderer on the earth. Now anyone who finds me will kill me!”

Many are saying, “Who can show us anything good?” Let the light of your presence shine on us, O Lord.

You defend my integrity, and you set me in your presence forever.

But your wrongs have separated you from your God, and your sins have made him hide his face so that he doesn’t hear you.

I will give them the same attitude and the same purpose so that they will fear me as long as they live. This will be for their own good and for the good of their children.

This promise belongs to you and to your children and to everyone who is far away. It belongs to everyone who worships the Lord our God.”
