God said, “I have given you every plant with seeds on the face of the earth and every tree that has fruit with seeds. This will be your food.

The Lord God commanded the man. He said, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden.

Wild bushes and plants were not on the earth yet because the Lord God hadn’t sent rain on the earth. Also, there was no one to farm the land.

The Lord God made all the trees grow out of the ground. These trees were nice to look at, and their fruit was good to eat. The tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil grew in the middle of the garden.

“Above the ground food grows, but beneath it the food decays as if ⌞it were burned⌟ by fire.

He is like a tree planted beside streams— a tree that produces fruit in season and whose leaves do not wither. He succeeds in everything he does.

He covers the sky with clouds. He provides rain for the ground. He makes grass grow on the mountains.

Like the ground that brings forth its crops and like a garden that makes the seed in it grow, so the Almighty Lord will make righteousness and praise spring up in front of all nations.

He will be like a tree that is planted by water. It will send its roots down to a stream. It will not be afraid in the heat of summer. Its leaves will turn green. It will not be anxious during droughts. It will not stop producing fruit.

The ax is now ready to cut the roots of the trees. Any tree that doesn’t produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into a fire.

That’s the way God clothes the grass in the field. Today it’s alive, and tomorrow it’s thrown into an incinerator. So how much more will he clothe you people who have so little faith?

The ground produces grain by itself. First the green blade appears, then the head, then the head full of grain.

God gives the plant the form he wants it to have. Each kind of seed grows into its own form.

God blesses the earth. So rain often falls on it, and it produces useful crops for farmers.

My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree produce olives? Can a grapevine produce figs? In the same way, a pool of salt water can’t produce fresh water.
