Ezra 9:14

God's Word

If we break your commandments again and intermarry with people doing these disgusting things, you will become even more angry with us until you finally destroy us and no survivors are left.

Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have been unfaithful by marrying foreign women, and now you have added to Israel’s guilt.

The Israelites and their sons have married some of these foreign women. They have mixed our holy race with the neighboring groups of people. Furthermore, the leaders and officials have led the way in being unfaithful.”

And now, for a brief moment, the Lord our God has been kind enough to leave us a few survivors from Babylon and to give us a secure hold on his holy place. Our God has made our eyes light up and has given us new opportunities while we were slaves.

Isn’t this what your ancestors did, with the results that our God brought all these evils on us and on this city? Now you’re making him even more angry with Israel by treating the day of rest—a holy day, as unholy.”

Never make a treaty with them and their gods.

Now leave me alone. I’m so angry with them I am going to destroy them. Then I’ll make you into a great nation.”

If the Lord of Armies hadn’t left us a few survivors, we would have been like Sodom and Gomorrah.

Have you forgotten the wicked things done by your ancestors, by the kings of Judah and their wives, and by you and your wives in Judah and on the streets of Jerusalem?

Don’t be afraid, my servant Jacob,” declares the Lord. “I am with you. I will completely destroy all the nations where I scattered you, but I will not completely destroy you. I will correct you with justice. I won’t let you go entirely unpunished.”

“ ‘But I will let some people live. Some people will escape the battle among the nations and be scattered throughout the countries.

“Move away from these men, and I’ll destroy them in an instant.”

“Get away from these people, and let me destroy them in an instant!” Immediately, they bowed with their faces touching the ground.

Later, Jesus met the man in the temple courtyard and told him, “You’re well now. Stop sinning so that something worse doesn’t happen to you.”

What should we say then? Should we continue to sin so that God’s kindness  will increase?

Leave me alone! I’ll destroy them and wipe their name off the earth. Then I’ll make you into a nation larger and stronger than they are.”

Even at Mount Horeb you made the Lord so angry that he wanted to destroy you.

You must never make a treaty with the people who live in this land. You must tear down their altars.’ But you didn’t obey me. What do you think you’re doing?
