“When you take a census of the Israelites, each person must pay the Lord a ransom for his life when he is counted. Then no plague will happen to them when they are counted.

So the Lord sent a plague on Israel, and 70,000 Israelites died.

Joab responded, “May the Lord multiply his people a hundred times over. But, Your Majesty, aren’t they all your servants? Why are you trying to do this? Why do you wish to make Israel guilty of ⌞this⌟ sin?”

Joab, son of Zeruiah, started to count them but didn’t finish. God was angry with Israel because of this, and the report from it was never included in the official records of King David.

So the king called for the chief priest Jehoiada and asked him, “Why didn’t you require the Levites to bring the contributions from Judah and Jerusalem? The Lord’s servant Moses and the assembly had required Israel to give contributions for the use of the tent containing the words of God’s promise.”

Then they issued a proclamation in Judah and Jerusalem that the contributions should be brought to the Lord. (In the desert the Lord’s servant Moses had required Israel to make contributions.)

then he will have pity on them and say, ‘Free them from going into the pit. I have found a ransom.’

Be careful that you are not led astray with riches. Don’t let a large bribe turn you ⌞to evil ways⌟.

No one can ever buy back another person or pay God a ransom for his life.

Then the Lord said to Moses,

They said to him, “Sir, we have counted all the soldiers under our command, and not one of them is missing.

So we have brought as gifts to the Lord the gold jewelry that each of us found—arm bands, bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and pendants. We offer them to make peace with the Lord.”

It’s the same way with the Son of Man. He didn’t come so that others could serve him. He came to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many people.”

He sacrificed himself for all people to free them from their sins. This message is valid for every era.
