One of the wives of a disciple of the prophets called to Elisha, “Sir, my husband is dead! You know how he feared the Lord. Now a creditor has come to take my two children as slaves.”

She went and told the man of God. He said, “Sell the oil, and pay your debt. The rest is for you and your children.”

After thinking it over, I confronted the nobles and the leaders. I told them, “You are charging interest on loans made to your own relatives.” I arranged for a large meeting to deal with them.

The one who does not collect interest on a loan or take a bribe against an innocent person. Whoever does these things will never be shaken.

Whoever becomes wealthy through ⌞unfair⌟ loans and interest collects them for the one who is kind to the poor.

I’m so miserable! Why did my mother give birth to me? I am a man who argues and quarrels with the whole earth. I have never lent or borrowed anything. Yet, everyone curses me.

He lends money for interest and makes excessive profits. Will this person live? He will not live. He has done all these disgusting things. So he must die, and he will be responsible for his own death.

He refuses to hurt the poor. He doesn’t charge interest or make excessive profits. He obeys my rules and lives by my laws. He won’t die for his father’s sins. He will certainly live.

He doesn’t oppress anyone. He returns what a borrower gives him as security for a loan. He doesn’t rob anyone. He gives food to people who are hungry, and he gives clothes to those who are naked.

He doesn’t lend money for interest or make an excessive profit. He refuses to do evil things, and he judges everyone fairly.

Other people take bribes to murder people. You collect interest and make excessive profits. You make profits by mistreating your neighbors. You have forgotten me, declares the Almighty Lord.

Beside every altar, they spread themselves out on clothes taken as security. In the temples of their gods, they drink the wine that they bought with fines.

then you should have invested my money with the bankers. When I returned, I would have received my money back with interest.

Then why didn’t you put my money in the bank? When I came back, I could have collected it with interest.’

This is what you must do whenever there are poor Israelites in one of your cities in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

Make sure you bring it back to him at sunset. When he wears his coat to bed ⌞that night⌟, he’ll bless you. You will have done the right thing in the presence of the Lord your God.
