“Whenever you buy a Hebrew slave, he will be your slave for six years. In the seventh year he may leave as a free man, without paying for his freedom.

May God give you dew from the sky, fertile fields on the earth, and plenty of fresh grain and new wine.

Esau said, “Isn’t that why he’s named Jacob? He’s cheated me twice already: He took my rights as firstborn, and now he’s taken my blessing.” So he asked, “Haven’t you saved a blessing for me?”

One of the wives of a disciple of the prophets called to Elisha, “Sir, my husband is dead! You know how he feared the Lord. Now a creditor has come to take my two children as slaves.”

Then I told them, “We have done our best to buy back our Jewish relatives who had been sold to other nations. Now you are selling your Jewish relatives so that we have to buy them back again!” They were unable to say anything.

“Any male slave you have bought may eat it after you have circumcised him.

If he comes to you by himself, he must leave by himself. If he comes as a married man, his wife may leave with him.

“Whenever a man sells his daughter into slavery, she will not go free the way male slaves do.

But if it happens after sunrise, he is guilty of murder. “A thief must make up for what he has stolen. If he is unable to do so, he must be sold ⌞as a slave⌟ to pay for what he stole.

If he cannot buy his freedom in these ways, he and his children will be released in the year of jubilee.

Because he could not pay off the debt, the master ordered him, his wife, his children, and all that he had to be sold to pay off the account.

You were bought for a price. So bring glory to God in the way you use your body.

At the end of every seven years, you must cancel debts.

If you have to let your slave go free, it won’t be a hardship for you. It would have cost you twice as much to hire someone to do the same work for those six years. Besides, the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do.

Then Moses commanded them, “At the end of every seventh year you must cancel debts. At that time, during the Festival of Booths,
