Exodus 17:2

God's Word

So they complained to Moses by saying, “Give us water to drink!” Moses said to them, “Why are you complaining to me? Why are you testing the Lord?”

They quickly forgot what he did. They did not wait for his advice.

They had an unreasonable desire ⌞for food⌟ in the wilderness. In the desert they tested God.

They deliberately tested God by demanding the food they craved.

Again and again they tested God, and they pushed the Holy One of Israel to the limit.

They tested God Most High and rebelled against him. They did not obey his written instructions.

“Do not be stubborn like ⌞my people were⌟ at Meribah, like the time at Massah in the desert.

Your ancestors challenged me and tested me there, although they had seen what I had done.

The people complained about Moses by asking, “What are we supposed to drink?”

Moses also said, “The Lord will give you meat to eat in the evening and all the food you want in the morning. The Lord has heard you complaining about him. Who are we? You’re not complaining about us but about the Lord.”

He named that place Massah [Testing] and Meribah [Complaining] because the Israelites complained and because they tested the Lord, asking, “Is the Lord with us or not?”

So they said, “May the Lord see what you have done and judge you! You have made Pharaoh and his officials hate us. You have given them an excuse to kill us.”

But Ahaz answered, “I won’t ask; I wouldn’t think of testing the Lord.”

So now we call arrogant people blessed. Not only are evildoers encouraged, they even test God and get away with it.’ ”

They complained to Moses and Aaron, “If only we had died in Egypt or this desert!

none of the people who saw my glory and the miraculous signs I did in Egypt and in the desert will see the land which I promised their ancestors. They have tested me now ten times and refused to obey me.

and criticized God and Moses. They said, “Why did you make us leave Egypt—just to let us die in the desert? There’s no bread or water, and we can’t stand this awful food!”

Jesus said to him, “Again, Scripture says, ‘Never tempt the Lord your God.’ ”

The younger son said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the property.’ So the father divided his property between his two sons.

Jesus answered him, “It has been said, ‘Never tempt the Lord your God.’ ”

So why are you testing God? You’re putting a burden on the disciples, a burden neither our ancestors nor we can carry.

Then Peter said to her, “How could you and your husband agree to test the Lord’s Spirit? Those who buried your husband are standing at the door, and they will carry you outside for burial.”

We shouldn’t put the Lord  to the test as some of them did. They were killed by snakes.

Never test the Lord your God as you did at Massah.

You also made the Lord angry at Taberah, Massah, and Kibroth Hattaavah.

That is where your ancestors tested me,

But Samuel considered it wrong for them to request a king to judge them. So Samuel prayed to the Lord.
