Didn’t we tell you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone! Let us go on serving the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!”

When our ancestors were in Egypt, they gave no thought to your miracles. They did not remember your numerous acts of mercy, so they rebelled at the sea, the Red Sea.

When Pharaoh let the people go, God didn’t lead them on the road through Philistine territory, although that was the shortest route. God said, “If they see that they have to fight a war, they may change their minds and go back to Egypt.”

I have heard the cry of the people of Israel. I have seen how the Egyptians are oppressing them.

So they said, “May the Lord see what you have done and judge you! You have made Pharaoh and his officials hate us. You have given them an excuse to kill us.”

Moses reported this to the Israelites. But they would not listen to him because they were so discouraged by their back-breaking work.

The people of Ephraim have chosen to worship idols. Leave them alone!

So now, Lord, take my life. I’d rather be dead than alive.”

When the sun rose, God made a hot east wind blow. The sun beat down on Jonah’s head so that he was about to faint. He wanted to die. So he said, “I’d rather be dead than alive.”

“What do you want with us, Jesus from Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”

and shouted, “Why are you bothering me now, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Swear to God that you won’t torture me.”
