The Lord said, “I have seen the misery of my people in Egypt, and I have heard them crying out because of the slave drivers. I know how much they’re suffering.

I have heard the cry of the people of Israel. I have seen how the Egyptians are oppressing them.

A poor, wise person was found in that town. He saved the town using his wisdom. But no one remembered that poor person.

Then a different king, who knew nothing about Joseph, began to rule in Egypt.

This king was shrewd in the way he took advantage of our people. He mistreated our ancestors. He made them abandon their newborn babies outdoors, where they would die.

So the Egyptians treated us cruelly, oppressed us, and made us do back-breaking work for them.

That whole generation had joined their ancestors in death. So another generation grew up after them. They had no personal experience with the Lord or with what he had done for Israel.
