In every province touched by the king’s command and decree, the Jews went into mourning, fasting, weeping, and wailing. Many put on sackcloth and ashes.

In the days of Xerxes the following events took place. This was the same Xerxes who ruled over 127 provinces from India to Sudan.

On the thirteenth day of the first month the king’s scribes were summoned. All Haman’s orders were written to the king’s satraps, the governors of every province, and the officials of every people. They wrote to each province in its own script and to the people in each province in their own language. The orders were signed in the name of King Xerxes and sealed with the king’s ring.

“Assemble all the Jews in Susa. Fast for me: Do not eat or drink at all for three entire days. My servants and I will also fast. After that, I will go to the king, even if it is against a royal decree. If I die, I die.”

He even went right up to the king’s gate. (No one could enter it wearing sackcloth.)

Esther’s servants and eunuchs came and informed her ⌞about Mordecai⌟. The queen was stunned. She sent clothing for Mordecai to put on in place of his sackcloth, but he refused to accept it.

He did this in order to establish these days of Purim at the appointed time. Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther established them for themselves, as they had established for themselves and their descendants the practices of fasting with sadness.

Job took a piece of broken pottery to scratch himself as he sat in the ashes.

On that day the Almighty Lord of Armies will call for crying and for mourning, for shaving your heads and for wearing sackcloth.

That is why I say, “Turn away from me so that I can cry bitterly. Don’t try to comfort me because of the destruction brought on my people.”

Is this the kind of fasting I have chosen? Should people humble themselves for ⌞only⌟ a day? Is fasting just bowing your head like a cattail and making your bed from sackcloth and ashes? Is this what you call fasting? Is this an acceptable day to the Lord?

They cried loudly and bitterly over you. They put dust on their heads and covered themselves with ashes.

So I turned to the Lord God and looked to him for help. I prayed, pleaded, and fasted in sackcloth and ashes.

When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne, took off his robe, put on sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

The angels will throw them into a blazing furnace. People will cry and be in extreme pain there.

Then the king told his servants, ‘Tie his hands and feet, and throw him outside into the darkness. People will cry and be in extreme pain there.’

Joshua and the leaders of Israel tore their clothes in grief. They put dust on their heads and bowed down to the ground in front of the Lord’s ark. They stayed there until evening.

The messengers came to Saul’s town, Gibeah. When they told the people the news, the people cried loudly.
