God's Word

Thirty-eight years passed from the time we left Kadesh Barnea until we crossed the Zered River. During that time all our soldiers from that generation died, as the Lord had sworn they would.

Raising his hand, he swore that he would kill them in the wilderness,

Make us rejoice for as many days as you have made us suffer, for as many years as we have experienced evil.

You turn mortals back into dust and say, “Return, descendants of Adam.”

Indeed, all our days slip away because of your fury. We live out our years like one ⌞long⌟ sigh.

That is why I angrily took this solemn oath: ‘They will never enter my place of rest!’ ”

I also swore an oath to them in the desert. I swore that I would not bring them into the land that I had promised to give them. This land is the most beautiful land, a land flowing with milk and honey.

The Lord spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting in the Desert of Sinai. It was the first day of the second month in the second year after leaving Egypt. He said,

They came back to Moses, Aaron, and the whole community of Israel at Kadesh in the Desert of Paran. They gave their report and showed them the fruit from the land.

‘None of the people 20 years old or older, who came from Egypt, will see the land I promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob with an oath. This is because they didn’t wholeheartedly follow me.’

Yet, God was not pleased with most of them, so their dead bodies were scattered over the desert.

So we left Mount Horeb, as the Lord our God had commanded. We traveled through all that vast and dangerous desert you saw on the way to the mountain region of the Amorites. At last we came to Kadesh Barnea.

That’s why you stayed in Kadesh as long as you did.

Then the Lord said, “Now cross the Zered River.” So we crossed the Zered River.

When the last of these soldiers had died,

The Lord your God has blessed you in everything you have done. He has watched over you as you traveled through this vast desert. For 40 years now the Lord your God has been with you, and you haven’t needed a thing.

When your ancestors cried out to the Lord, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians. He made the sea flow back and cover them. You saw for yourselves what I did to Egypt. Then you lived in the desert for a long time.

This is the reason Joshua circumcised them: All the soldiers had died on the way through the desert after they left Egypt.

For 40 years the Israelites wandered through the desert until all their soldiers who left Egypt died. They died because they disobeyed the Lord. The Lord swore that he would not let them see this land flowing with milk and honey which he had sworn to give our ancestors.

I want to remind you about what you already know: The Lord once saved his people from Egypt. But on another occasion he destroyed those who didn’t believe.
