Where are we going anyway? Our own men have discouraged us by saying, ‘The people there are taller and stronger than we are. The cities are big with sky-high walls! We even saw the people of Anak there.’ ”

Then they said, “Let’s build a city for ourselves and a tower with its top in the sky. Let’s make a name for ourselves so that we won’t become scattered all over the face of the earth.”

The tribal leaders of Edom will be terrified. The powerful men of Moab will tremble. The people of Canaan will be deathly afraid.

That is why every hand will hang limp, and everyone’s courage will fail.

When they ask you why you are groaning, say, ‘News has come that will discourage everyone. People’s hands will hang limp, their hearts will lose courage, and their knees will become as weak as water. It’s coming! It will surely take place!’ declares the Almighty Lord.”

Then I said to you, “Don’t tremble. Don’t be afraid of them.

The Emites used to live there. These people were as strong, as numerous, and as tall as the people of Anak.

You may destroy trees that you know are not fruit trees. You may cut them down and use them in your blockade until you capture the city.

The officers should also tell the troops, “If you are afraid or have lost your courage, you may go home. Then you won’t ruin the morale of the other Israelites.”

You may say to yourselves, “These nations outnumber us. How can we force them out?”

None of the people of Anak remained in Israel. Some of them were left in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod.

But my companions discouraged the people. However, I was completely loyal to the Lord my God.

Caleb forced out Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, three descendants of Anak from Hebron.

When we heard about it, we lost heart. There was no courage left in any of us because of you. The Lord your God is the God of heaven and earth.

They told Joshua, “The Lord has given us the whole country. The people who live there are deathly afraid of us.”

She said to them, “I know the Lord will give you this land. Your presence terrifies us. All the people in this country are deathly afraid of you.

Then they went to fight the Canaanites who lived at Hebron. (In the past Hebron was called Kiriath Arba.) There they killed Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.

As Moses had promised, Hebron was given to Caleb, who forced out the three sons of Anak.
