I know that you are stubborn. Like iron, you are hardheaded. Like bronze, nothing gets through your thick skull.

Lord, your eyes look for the truth. You strike these people, but they don’t feel it. You crush them, but they refuse to be corrected. They are more stubborn than rocks. They refuse to turn back.

You have planted wickedness and harvested evil. You have eaten the fruit that your lies produced. You have trusted your own power and your many warriors.

They say many things. They lie when they take oaths, and they make promises they don’t intend to keep. That’s why lawsuits spring up like poisonous weeds in the furrows of a field.

I will take their judges away from them. I will kill all their officials at the same time. The Lord has said this.

Those who collect profits in their palaces through violent and destructive acts don’t know how to do what is right, declares the Lord.

You, Israel, turn justice into poison and throw righteousness on the ground.

Their hands are skilled in doing evil. Officials ask for gifts. Judges accept bribes. Powerful people dictate what they want. So they scheme together.

A harvest that has God’s approval comes from the peace planted by peacemakers.
