The Lord swore an oath to David. This is a truth he will not take back: “I will set one of your own descendants on your throne.

There I will make a horn sprout up for David. I will prepare a lamp for my anointed one.

The Lord has made his salvation known. He has uncovered his righteousness for the nations to see.

When that day comes, the branch of the Lord will be beautiful and wonderful. The fruit of the land will be the pride and joy of Israel’s survivors.

So the Lord himself will give you this sign: A virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and she will name him Immanuel [God Is With Us].

Ruins! Ruins! I will turn this place into ruins! It will not be restored until its rightful owner comes. Then I will give it to him.

“ ‘My servant David will be their king, and all of them will have one shepherd. They will live by my rules, and they will obey my laws.

You, Bethlehem Ephrathah, are too small to be included among Judah’s cities. Yet, from you Israel’s future ruler will come for me. His origins go back to the distant past, to days long ago.

You will be faithful to Jacob. You will have mercy on Abraham as you swore by an oath to our ancestors long ago.

⌞The Lord declares,⌟ “On that day a fountain will be opened for David’s family and for those who live in Jerusalem to wash away ⌞their⌟ sin and stain.

“Arise, sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is my friend,” declares the Lord of Armies. “Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered. Then I will turn my hand against the little ones.”

Then say to him, ‘This is what the Lord of Armies says: Here is the man whose name is Branch. He will branch out from where he is, and he will rebuild the Lord’s temple.

Rejoice with all your heart, people of Zion! Shout in triumph, people of Jerusalem! Look! Your King is coming to you: He is righteous and victorious. He is humble and rides on a donkey, on a colt, a young pack animal.

“I’m going to send my messenger, and he will clear the way ahead of me. Then the Lord you are looking for will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the promise  will come. He is the one you want,” says the Lord of Armies.

“The Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings for you people who fear my name. You will go out and leap like calves let out of a stall.

When Paul saw that some of them were Sadducees and others were Pharisees, he shouted in the council, “Brothers, I’m a Pharisee and a descendant of Pharisees. I’m on trial because I expect that the dead will come back to life.”

I hope for the same thing my accusers do, that people with God’s approval and those without it will come back to life.

They could accuse me of only one thing. As I stood among them, I shouted, ‘I’m being tried in front of you because ⌞I believe that⌟ the dead will come back to life.’ ”

Why do all of you refuse to believe that God can bring dead people back to life?

That’s why I asked to see you and speak with you. I’m wearing these chains because of what Israel hopes for.”

Samuel and all the prophets who followed him spoke about these days.

Let me explain. Christ became a servant for the Jewish people to reveal God’s truth. As a result, he fulfilled God’s promise to the ancestors of the Jewish people.

But when the right time came, God sent his Son ⌞into the world⌟. A woman gave birth to him, and he came under the control of the laws given to Moses.

The Lord your God will send you a prophet, an Israelite like me. You must listen to him.

At the same time we can expect what we hope for—the appearance of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.
