All the people in all the tribes of Israel were arguing with one another, saying, “The king rescued us from our enemies and saved us from the Philistines, but now he has fled from Absalom and left the country.

But Joab and Abishai chased Abner. When the sun went down, they came to the hill of Ammah, opposite Giah on the road from Gibeon to the desert.

You rescued me from my conflicts with my people. You kept me as the leader of nations. A people I did not know will serve me.

When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king of Israel, all of them came to attack David. But David heard about it and went to the fortress.

David did as the Lord ordered him and defeated the Philistines from Geba to Gezer.

I was with you wherever you went, and I destroyed all your enemies in front of you. I will make your name famous like the names of the greatest people on earth.

You rescued me from my conflicts with the people. You made me the leader of nations. A people I did not know will serve me:

You made the land quake. You split it wide open. Heal the cracks in it because it is falling apart.

Moab is my washtub. I will throw my shoe over Edom. I will shout in triumph over Philistia.”

Through faith they conquered kingdoms, did what God approved, and received what God had promised. They shut the mouths of lions,

put out raging fires, and escaped death. They found strength when they were weak. They were powerful in battle and defeated other armies.

The power of the Philistines was crushed, so they didn’t come into Israel’s territory again. The Lord restrained the Philistines as long as Samuel lived.
