Zeruiah’s three sons were there: Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Asahel was as fast on his feet as a wild gazelle.

Saul and Jonathan were loved and well-liked while they were living. They were not separated even when they died. They were swifter than eagles and stronger than lions.

Joab, Zeruiah’s son, knew the king was still thinking about Absalom.

He chased Abner and refused to leave him alone.

He makes my feet like those of a deer and gives me sure footing on high places.

One of the thirty was Joab’s brother Asahel. ⌞The thirty leading men were⌟ Elhanan (son of Dodo) from Bethlehem,

Some men left Gad to join David at the fortified camp in the desert. They were warriors, trained soldiers, able to fight with shields and spears. They looked like lions and were as fast as gazelles on the hills.

Ezer was the first of these soldiers. The second was Obadiah. The third was Eliab.

Asahel, Joab’s brother, was in charge of the fourth unit during the fourth month, and after him was his son Zebadiah. In his unit there were 24,000.

He makes my feet like those of a deer and gives me sure footing on high places.

I saw something else under the sun. The race isn’t ⌞won⌟ by fast runners, or the battle by heroes. Wise people don’t necessarily have food. Intelligent people don’t necessarily have riches, and skilled people don’t necessarily receive special treatment. But time and unpredictable events overtake all of them.

When the day brings a cooling breeze and the shadows flee, turn around, my beloved. Run like a gazelle or a young stag on the mountains that separate us!

Come away quickly, my beloved. Run like a gazelle or a young stag on the mountains of spices.

Runners will not be able to escape. Strong men will find that their strength is useless. Soldiers will not be able to save themselves.

The Lord Almighty is my strength. He makes my feet like those of a deer. He makes me walk on the mountains. For the choir director; on stringed instruments.

David asked Ahimelech the Hittite and Abishai, who was Zeruiah’s son and Joab’s brother, “Who will go with me to Saul in the camp?” Abishai answered, “I’ll go with you.”
