There David’s men defeated Israel’s army, and the massacre was sizable that day—20,000 men.

Absalom happened to come face to face with some of David’s men. He was riding on a mule, and the mule went under the tangled branches of a large tree. Absalom’s head became caught in the tree. So he was left hanging  in midair when the mule that was under him ran away.

The survivors fled to Aphek, the city where the wall fell on 27,000 of them. Benhadad had also fled. He came to the city and hid in an inner room.

Arise, O Lord! Save me, O my God! You have slapped all my enemies in the face. You have smashed the teeth of wicked people.

Judge me, O God, and plead my case against an ungodly nation. Rescue me from deceitful and unjust people.

Your breath blew the sea over them. They sank like lead in the raging water.

Fear the Lord, my son. Fear the king as well. Do not associate with those who always insist upon change,

because disaster will come to them suddenly. Who knows what misery both may bring?

As they fled from the Israelites down the slope of Beth Horon toward Azekah, the Lord threw huge hailstones on them. More died from the hailstones than from Israelite swords.
