Then David was told, “Ahithophel is among those conspiring with Absalom.” So David prayed, “Lord, make Ahithophel’s advice foolish.”

While Absalom was offering sacrifices, he sent for Ahithophel, David’s adviser, to come from his home in Giloh. Meanwhile, the conspiracy grew stronger, and the number of people siding with Absalom kept getting larger.

In those days both David and Absalom thought that Ahithophel’s advice was like getting an answer from God.

Absalom and all the people of Israel said, “The advice of Hushai from Archi’s family is better than Ahithophel’s advice.” (The Lord had commanded Ahithophel’s good advice to be defeated in order to ruin Absalom.)

When Ahithophel saw that his advice hadn’t been followed, he saddled his donkey, left, and went home to his own city. He gave instructions to his family. Then he hanged himself, died, and was buried in his father’s tomb.

Absalom said, “Please call Hushai, who is descended from Archi’s family, and let us hear what he, too, has to say.”

“This time Ahithophel’s advice is no good,” Hushai said to Absalom.

He keeps shrewd people from carrying out their plans so that they cannot do anything successfully.

They surround me with hateful words. They fight against me for no reason.

O Lord, look how my enemies have increased! Many are attacking me.

Even my closest friend whom I trusted, the one who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.

Day and night they go around on ⌞top of⌟ the city walls. Trouble and misery are everywhere.

If an enemy had insulted me, then I could bear it. If someone who hated me had attacked me, then I could hide from him.

The Egyptians will lose courage. I will unravel their plans. They will turn to idols, ghosts, mediums, and fortunetellers.

I cause the signs of false prophets to fail and make fools of fortunetellers. I make wise men retreat and turn their knowledge into foolishness.

“I’m not talking about all of you. I know the people I’ve chosen ⌞to be apostles⌟. However, I’ve made my choice so that Scripture will come true. It says, ‘The one who eats my bread has turned against me.’

Where is the wise person? Where is the scholar? Where is the persuasive speaker of our time? Hasn’t God turned the wisdom of the world into nonsense?

That kind of wisdom doesn’t come from above. It belongs to this world. It is self-centered and demonic.
