After a long time Judah’s wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had finished mourning, he and his friend Hirah from Adullam went to Timnah where the men were shearing Judah’s sheep.

Two years later Absalom had sheepshearers at Baal Hazor near Ephraim. He invited all the king’s sons.

“No, Son,” the king answered Absalom. “If we all go, we’ll be a burden to you.” Even when Absalom continued to urge  him, David did not want to go, though he did give Absalom his blessing.

All people speak foolishly. They speak with flattering lips. They say one thing but mean another.

His speech is smoother than butter, but there is war in his heart. His words are more soothing than oil, but they are like swords ready to attack.

I hear that your sheepshearers are with you. Your shepherds have been with us, ⌞and⌟ we have not mistreated them. Nothing of theirs has been missing as long as they’ve been in Carmel.
