One of the wives of a disciple of the prophets called to Elisha, “Sir, my husband is dead! You know how he feared the Lord. Now a creditor has come to take my two children as slaves.”

“Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you did not refuse to give me your son, your only son.”

Ahab sent for Obadiah, who was in charge of the palace. Obadiah was a devout worshiper of the Lord.

A disciple of the prophets spoke to a friend as the Lord’s word had told him. ⌞The disciple said,⌟ “Punch me,” but the man refused to punch him.

The disciples of the prophets who were at Jericho saw him from a distance. They said, “Elijah’s spirit rests on Elisha!” Then they went to meet him and bowed in front of him with their faces touching the ground.

Some of the disciples of the prophets at Bethel came to Elisha. They asked him, “Do you know that the Lord is going to take your master from you today?” He answered, “Yes, I know. Be quiet.”

Then some of the disciples of the prophets who were in Jericho approached Elisha. They asked, “Do you know that the Lord is going to take your master from you today?” He answered, “Yes, I know. Be quiet.”

Fifty disciples of the prophets stood at a distance as Elijah and Elisha stood by the Jordan River.

When Elisha went back to Gilgal, there was a famine in the country. ⌞One day,⌟ while the disciples of the prophets were meeting with him, he told his servant, “Put a large pot on the fire, and cook some stew for the disciples of the prophets.”

So the man of God would send a message to the king of Israel, “Be careful not to go by that place. The Arameans are hiding there.”

If the inhabitants of the land bring merchandise or grain to sell on the day of rest—a holy day, we won’t buy anything from them on the day of rest or any other holy day. During the seventh year, we won’t plant the fields or collect any debts.

I put my brother Hanani and Hananiah, the commander of the fortress, in charge of Jerusalem. Hananiah was a trustworthy man, and he feared God more than most people do.

As high as the heavens are above the earth— that is how vast his mercy is toward those who fear him.

But from everlasting to everlasting, the Lord’s mercy is on those who fear him. His righteousness belongs to their children and grandchildren,

He will bless those who fear the Lord, from the least important to the most important.

The Lord is pleased with those who fear him, with those who wait with hope for his mercy.

A rich person rules poor people, and a borrower is a slave to a lender.

After having heard it all, this is the conclusion: Fear God, and keep his commands, because this applies to everyone.

A sinner may commit a hundred crimes and yet live a long life. Still, I know with certainty that it will go well for those who fear God, because they fear him.

This is what the Lord says: Where are your mother’s divorce papers? Did I give her any to get rid of her? To which of my creditors did I sell you? You were sold because of your sins. I got rid of your mother because of your rebellion.

‘Every seven years each of you must free any Hebrews who sold themselves to you. When they have served you for six years, you must set them free.’ But your ancestors refused to obey me or listen to me.

After he has sold himself, he has the right to be bought back. One of his brothers may buy him back.

Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, and the Lord paid attention and listened. A book was written in his presence to be a reminder to those who feared the Lord and respected his name.

“The Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings for you people who fear my name. You will go out and leap like calves let out of a stall.

Because he could not pay off the debt, the master ordered him, his wife, his children, and all that he had to be sold to pay off the account.

But he refused. Instead, he turned away and had that servant put into prison until he would repay what he owed.

That is what my Father in heaven will do to you if each of you does not sincerely forgive other believers.”

“Brothers—descendants of Abraham and converts to Judaism—the message that God saves people was sent to us.

No mercy will be shown to those who show no mercy to others. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

Lord, who won’t fear and praise your name? You are the only holy one, and all the nations will come to worship you because they know about your fair judgments.”

A voice came from the throne. It said, “Praise our God, all who serve and fear him, no matter who you are.”

Now, Naomi’s husband Elimelech died, and she was left alone with her two sons.

Then everyone who was in trouble, in debt, or bitter about life joined him, and he became their commander. There were about four hundred men with him.
