So the Lord will desert Israel because of Jeroboam’s sins, the sins which he led Israel to commit.”

He followed the example of the kings of Israel and even sacrificed his son by burning him alive. Sacrificing ⌞children⌟ was one of the disgusting things done by the nations that the Lord had forced out of the Israelites’ way.

Then the Lord spoke through his servants the prophets:

Manasseh misled Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem so that they did more evil things than the nations that the Lord had destroyed when the Israelites arrived in the land.

But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his words, and made fun of his prophets until the Lord became angry with his people. He could no longer heal them.

But they were defiant and rebelled against you. They threw your teachings over their shoulders and killed your prophets who warned them to turn back to you. They committed outrageous sins.

Wicked people parade around when immorality increases among Adam’s descendants.

I am the Lord your God, the one who brought you out of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.

If a ruler pays attention to lies, all his servants become wicked.

Then you will know that I am the Lord. You haven’t lived by my laws, and you haven’t obeyed my rules. You have followed the standards set by the nations around you.”

You didn’t follow their ways. You didn’t do the same disgusting things that they did. It only took you a little time to be more corrupt than they ever were.

Tell it, ‘This is what the Almighty Lord says: ⌞Jerusalem,⌟ you are the city that murders people who live in you. Your time has come. You dishonor yourself with disgusting idols.

The people of Jerusalem have rebelled against my rules and my laws more than the surrounding nations. They have rejected my rules, and they don’t live by my laws.

“So this is what the Almighty Lord says: ⌞People of Jerusalem,⌟ you have caused more trouble than the nations around you. You haven’t lived by my laws or obeyed my rules. You haven’t even lived up to the standards of the nations around you.

We haven’t listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, leaders, ancestors, and all the common people.

Ephraim is oppressed—crushed by punishment, because its people are determined to chase idols.

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you kill the prophets and stone to death those sent to you! How often I wanted to gather your children together the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings! But you were not willing!

If I hadn’t come and spoken to them, they wouldn’t have any sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin.

Whoever knows what is right but doesn’t do it is sinning.

But I have something against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet. She teaches and misleads my servants to sin sexually and to eat food sacrificed to idols.

But the people refused to listen to Samuel. They said, “No, we want a king!
