So the official in charge of the palace, the mayor of the city, the respected leaders, and the guardians sent this message to Jehu: “We are your servants. We’ll do everything you tell us. We won’t make anyone king. Do what you think is best.”

So they dressed in sackcloth and put ropes around their necks. They went to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Benhadad says, ‘Please let me live.’ ” Ahab asked, “He’s still alive? He’s my brother.”

The king of Israel answered, “As you say, Your Majesty. I and everything I have are yours.”

So he wrote them a second letter. It read, “If you are on my side and ready to listen to me, bring the heads of your master’s heirs to me in Jezreel about this time tomorrow.” The 70 male heirs were staying with the city’s most powerful men. These men had raised them.

Then King Hezekiah of Judah sent this message to the king of Assyria at Lachish: “I have done wrong. Go away, and leave me alone. I’ll pay whatever penalty you give me.” So the king of Assyria demanded that King Hezekiah of Judah pay 22,500 pounds of silver and 2,250 pounds of gold.

Don’t listen to them. Instead, serve the king of Babylon, and live. Why should this city be turned into rubble?

Am I their mother? Did I give birth to them? Are you really asking me to carry them in my arms—as a nurse carries a baby—all the way to the land you promised their ancestors with an oath?

Those who serve me must follow me. My servants will be with me wherever I will be. If people serve me, the Father will honor them.

Our leaders and everyone who lives in our country told us, ‘Take what you need for the trip, and go meet them. Tell them, “We’re at your mercy. Make a treaty with us right now.” ’

They responded to Joshua, “We’re at your mercy.” Joshua asked them, “Who are you, and where did you come from?”
