One nation crushed another nation; one city crushed another. God had tormented them with every kind of trouble.

He handed them over to other nations, and those who hated them ruled them.

I send them against a godless nation. In my fury I order them against the people to take their belongings, loot them, and trample on them like mud in the streets.

“I will turn one Egyptian against another. They will fight— brother against brother, neighbor against neighbor, city against city, kingdom against kingdom.

“This is what the Lord of Armies says: Disaster is spreading from nation to nation. A great storm is brewing from the distant corners of the earth.”

If a ram’s horn sounds an alarm in a city, won’t the people be alarmed? If there is a disaster in a city, hasn’t the Lord done it?

I will overthrow the thrones of kingdoms and destroy the power of nations. I will overthrow chariots and their riders, and the horses will fall along with their riders. They will kill one another with swords.

Nation will fight against nation and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.

So the Lord became angry with the people of Israel. He handed them over to people who robbed them. He also used their enemies around them to defeat them. They could no longer stand up against their enemies.
